Buying That Salvage Project

Looking for a vehicle that has been in an accident and being resold as a salvage project from say an insurance company can be lucrative if done correctly or a money pit if not. The trick is to spend sufficient time getting the right car first. But supposing you can choose from thousands of salvage vehicle in one go from several auction sites across the UK in one go?

Well you can with a company called salvagesparefinder, that brings many insurance car auctions together within one website. Of course this is not the end of the process, you can keep revisiting the website to get a feel to what is available.  Unfortunately no salvage car is the same, and all require a different type of repair to different investment levels, but at least you can see what is available and take the time to cost the repair costs.

Occasionally you may see vehicles that may be deemed as a scrap car, but with plenty of life left with some work. Even if you never buy, at least there is a platform to see the alternatives, to help you make the decision, is buying salvage right for you or not?

UK Car Production

The UK was the 4th biggest car producer in europe in 2009 with Germany being top, Spain 2nd, France 3rd and Czech Republic being 5th. Britain’s car makers hope to be producing nearly 50% more vehicles a year, within the next 5 years, but, figures show that even with this estimate, by 2014, Britain’s carmakers still won’t match the number made in 2008.

The most produced car in Britain, surprisingly, is the Nissan Qashqai, with 219,000 models expected to be produced in 2010. This is follwed closely by the BMW favorite, the MINI. There are forcasted 210,000 models to be made in 2010.

The SMMT motor industry group’s analysis of the future of European car production says that car and van production in Britain will rise by 25% this year to 1.34 million. With last year being Britains worst, since cars were mass produced in the country, 1.07 million cars were removed from the assembly line, so hopefully Britain’s recovery from the recession will prevent figures being this low in the future.

Alloy Wheels

Alloy Wheels are becoming increasingly more popular on all makes of cars. Most manufacturers now fit stock cars with alloy wheels whereas a few years ago all cars would come standard with steel wheels. Read my blog here about the reasons why people want alloy wheels as aposed to steel wheels.

Breakthrough in Windscreen Technology?…Or Not

On april 1st there were reports about prescription glass being invented for car windscreens. This later turned out to be an april fools joke, but it was pretty convincing… i fell for it for a few moments at least.

See the video on prescription windscreens here:

Towbars

Towbars are a vital part to any off-road/4×4 vehicle. Whats the point in having all that pulling power if you’ve got nothing to pull? Towbars have become increasingly more popular amongst the big off-road vehicles, due to rapidly changing and unpredictable weather conditions, and are a must have if you are likely to be affected by these conditions.

Power Steering

Power steering was first introduced into cars by Chrysler in 1951. Since then it has come along way. Nowadays if you buy a car (unless its a classic or vintage car) you can be pretty much certain that it will have power steering. Like anything else, power steeering has its pro’s and con’s. The advantages of having power steering are obviously that it makes turning a whole lot easier because of the rotation angle but the disadvantages are that they do tend to brake / need parts replacing and they can be dangerous at high speeds is not used correctly (can fling the vehicle), although this is rare, it does happen.

Carburettor

Carburettor’s are not used now as much as they were used back in the 1980’s thanks to the invention of fuel injectors, but they are still commonly found on motorcycles and smaller car engines. The carburettor’s main job is basically to control the amount of fuel going into the engine to keep the air/fuel ratio correct and to measure the air flow of the engine. The reason why this job is so hard is because air and fuel dont exactly mix together perfectly. The carburettor has to compensate for ambient temperatures, atmospheric pressures, engine speeds / engine loads and centrifugal forces. Above all this, they also have to try and produce as few emissions as possible.
